So How Long Till the Houston Texans Start Ryan Mallett?

It's finally happened. When the Houston Texans waited till the fourth round to draft a quarterback people expected it to happen then. When the team signed Ryan Fitzpatrick fans prayed it would happen. Now that the preseason is done and the Patriots know what they want to do going forward it finally did.

New England Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett has been traded to the Houston Texans.

What's the big deal? Easy--if the team could actually generate some offense it could actually be a contender this season (at least in the division). Barring injuries the defense looks like it is going to be one of the best in the league. Heck, judging from the preseason (so take it with a grain of salt) the special teams unit doesn't look too bad either.

It's just the offense. Right now it sucks.

Why anyone in the organization thought Ryan Fitzpatrick was a good idea is a mystery. He has had one good season in his career and that is it. He was horrible against the Cardinals (14.6 QB rating). Against Atlanta he redeemed himself (126.0 QB rating), but he was back to being marginal against Denver (70.7 QB rating) and he didn't play against San Francisco.

Case Keenum failed to make a claim on the job in the preseason and Tom Savage didn't even see a lot of time in the preseason.

If there was ever a time where quarterbacks should have shined it was during the last four weeks. Thanks to the emphasis on illegal contact by defenders even Mark Sanchez looked good. So for the Texans to flounder like they did says something about the guys they have behind center.

Bottom line--they either go with what they have and draft Marcus Mariotta or Jameis Winston with the first pick in the next draft or they do something now.

So they traded for Ryan Mallett--but what's the big deal? He has completed one pass over the last three seasons; two if you count his interception. He has eight career carries to his name and (-)9 rushing yards to go with them.

What do the Texans (and so many other teams that wanted to trade for him) see in him?

It has to be the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady affect. Mallett was a good quarterback coming out of college, but as a rookie he gave off a terrible impression; like he had something to hide and didn't care. As the back-up to a guy that never gets hurt he had the opportunity to do something that every quarterback dreams about.

He had the chance to learn how to play and act like a professional. From the looks of things during the preseason it appears as if he learned a thing or two. The question now becomes when do the Texans start him. The answer?

How long will it take him to learn at least the basics of the playbook?
