Rashad Jennings MCL Sprain Opens the Door Wide for Rookie Andre Williams to Take Over Giants Backfield

When the New York Giants drafted running back Andre Williams out of Boston College with a fourth round pick they probably had hopes he could eat up yards much like he did in college. After acquiring Rashad Jennings they would not need to rely on him before he is ready to handle the load that comes with being a featured back.

Well--it appears that time has come.

Jennings went down with what was later termed a knee sprain against the Falcons Sunday leaving Williams to carry the load. On the day he ended up rushing the ball 20 times for 65 yards and his second touchdown of the season.

His per carry average is not great, but it clear the team was willing to commit to him. It looks like they are going to continue to do so for at least a few more weeks:

When possible it is nice to ease a rookie in to playing, and the Giants may still do so and have him split carries with Peyton Hillis. The team does appear to be interested in seeing what Williams could do so it would not be shocking if Hillis was still left on the bench.
