Marcus Lattimore Tells San Francisco 49ers He's Retiring

Back when he was in college Marcus Lattimore was the best in the game. He was in Heisman talks and many considered it a given that he was destined for NFL glory some day. Even after one knee injury cut his season short confidence in him was high. However, when he was hit with another serious knee injury any became concerned.

The 49ers were still willing to use a draft pick on him in spite of his injury history. Their belief in him was that high. As luck would have it the damage was too much.

Even after two years of rehab and recovery the discomfort in his right knee was too much prompting Lattimore to end his career before it ever really started.

Via CSNBayArea:
“After prayer and careful consideration, I have decided it’s time to end my professional football career,” said Lattimore. “I have given my heart and soul to the game that I love, and it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life and help others. I have given every ounce of my energy toward making a full recovery from my knee injury, and I have made a lot of progress. Unfortunately, getting my knee fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable.
As tough as this must be for him to deal with it sounds like there will be life after football and possibly still in football. His former college coach, Steve Spurrier, has said that they will find a position for him at South Carolina if he wants it.

The 23-year old did not graduate so it would not be surprising if he were to become a grad assistant and finished his education.
