Dallas Cowboys Give DeMarco Murray a Slap in the Face With Four-Year, $16 Million Offer

It is still a little hard to believe, but the Dallas Cowboys managed to go an entire season without self-imploding. For years it has been inevitable that at some point Tony Romo would give a few games away, the defense would leak like a sieve, and Jason Garret would make some decisions so bad that only a virgin on prom night could make worse ones.

That didn't happen this season though. It has, however, happened only days in to the off-season.

Running back DeMarco Murray is one of a handful of free agents the team is going to have to make a decision on during the off-season. After how he dominated on the field you would think the decision would be easy--pay the man.

What made the team as good as it was this year was not Tony Romo. It was Murray running so well that Romo was not needed to win the game. Yes, Murray did have a tremendous line opening holes for him, but when you gain over 1800 yards you do a fair amount of the work yourself.

It seems that his work has earned him a four-year, $16 million offer.

To put that in to perspective here is a list of the guys that made as much or more than that last season: Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, LeSean McCoy, Arian Foster, Matt Forte, Marshawn Lynch, Jonathan Stewart, Frank Gore, C.J. Spiller, Trent Richardson, Ryan Mathews, Fred Jackson, Reggie Bush, Steven Jackson, and Chris Johnson.

Jerry--that deal sucks.

The name of the game in the NFL these days is pass, but the teams that have been in the hunt the last few years have been had two things: a solid running game and a stellar defense. Passing games are exciting and provide fans with endless numbers of highlights, but it is not what is winning championships (right Denver?).

Running and defense is. Dallas finally started getting its defense together this season. With Sean Lee returning next season it should be even better. If the Cowboys expect to make a serious run next season it needs to make a respectable offer to Murray.

Otherwise someone else will and Dallas will be stuck with someone who doesn't feel he should pay for underwear as RB1.

  1. I generally thing JJ is a poor decision maker when it comes to football. However, in this case, I think he is correct. D. Murray had a remarkable year behind one of, if not the best, offensive line in the league. However, what did he do the previous two years to make a name for himself. Let's see, injured and injured; missed most of both seasons. This isn't baseball folks where you can virtually pay anything based upon one year of performance. I have no doubt that Murray will be a great back. You can asked to be paid whatever you want and some stupid team out there with an average offensive line will probably pay it. Murray in the short time he played for the two previous seasons did not show a propensity to run consistently behind the Cowboys's marginal offensive line. Why would anybody bet the farm on a one year performance. Dez Bryant, on the other hand, has gotten better each year and has shown that he is a star receiver. If Murray is as intelligent as I think he is, he well negotiate a reasonable shorter term deal in order to stay in Dallas and play behind a great offensive line that is only going to get better. When he strings together a couple more years of dramatic performances, JJ will make sure he gets paid. As Romo how that worked out for him? Pretty darn good if you ask me. If Murray runs to the money, God help him if it is not a contender because history says his body can't take it. Good Luck DeMarco. I hope you stay a Cowboy.

  2. We deserve some type of home town discount for keeping him in fold for entire contract
