Patrick Peterson is paid like one of the best defensive backs in the NFL should be paid. That being said, he will be the first to admit that he did not have the greatest season last year in his opinion. His head coach, Bruce Arians, does not concur with Peterson's assessment, but does think that his September was not up to par. After September he got it together and had a fine season.
As it turns out, there was a pretty good reason why his first month was off.

Peterson was having some issues with his blood sugar levels. Arians told Mike Florio at the combine that his DB was almost, but not quite considered diabetic but was pretty darn close. Once the issue was discovered and dealt with by the team's medical staff he was fine and began playing up to par.
Once it was under control there were no other issues and none are expected in the future either. Here's a video of the interview:
