Is the End Near For Atlanta Falcons RB Steven Jackson?

For years the only player worth watching in St. Louis was running back Steven Jackson. The big, bruiser from Oregon State was able to pound the rock for almost 10,000 yards (with another 3000 via the passing game) for the Rams before he voided the final year of his contract and leave St. Louis after the 2012 season.

Atlanta picked him up and he has done well for the Falcons for the last couple years, but it looks like his time in the ATL may have come to an end.

Jackson is going to be officially old for an NFL running back when the 2015 starts, 32. Tack on his declining production and he becomes the first guy the team will look to cut when it needs salary cap space. After running for over 1000 yards in eight of his nine season in St. Louis he has not been very productive for the Falcons.

In two seasons he has rushed for just 1250 yards and averaged a rather pedestrian 3.6 yards a carry. Should Atlanta decided to cut him they will save $3.75 million against the salary cap. Should they do so you can also expect the Falcons to look for running back help in the draft (who will be cheaper and likely much more productive).

So--does that mean S-Jax is done? Possibly, but not necessarily. Jackson is a pretty good sized guy at 6'2" and 240 pounds, the ideal size for a goal line/short yardage back. He will not get paid anything close to what he has been getting, but it will either be that or being out of the game.
