New Peyton Manning Deal Expected to be Done This Week

Peyton Manning is going to go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, Super Bowl wins or not. When he does retire he will likely be the easiest vote in to the Hall of Fame once he is eligible, but it appears that he is not going to start working on his eligibility anytime soon. Word is that his contract is going to be reworked sometime this week, he will take his physical, and then he will be officially back.

For at least one more season.

One of the things free agents no matter how talented they are have to keep in mind is that there is always a price tag where they become too expensive, but there is no telling how much teams are willing to pay. A story posted by the Denver Post goes in detail how Manning's contract with the Broncos came to be.

When Manning became a free agent his agent, Tom Condon, envisioned his client going for as much as $25 million which the Tennessee Titans offered. So when Peyton chose to go with Denver he asked his agent what Tom Brady was making and said he didn't want anymore than that ($18 million). When he got $19.4 million/season he was angry.

Manning, not wishing to become a burden and stay too long, asked that a clause be included that he pass a physical reach off-season as well. He didn't want to become that guy that drained the team's resources and became more of a hindrance than a help.

So the notion that he is not willing to renegotiate his contract to help the team is just wrong. He did it twice for the Colts and it should come as no surprise that he is doing it now. He wants to win. To do that he knows the team needs more than money--which he has plenty of and can spare.
