Next Season Going to be the Last for San Diego Chargers QB Phillip Rivers?

Phillip Rivers has been the man for San Diego for quite some time. A first round draft pick in 2004 he had to wait for the team to get tired of Drew Brees before getting the chance to start in 2006. Since then he has made the Pro Bowl five times, been named comeback player of the year, and led the team to the post season five times (and to the conference championship once).

He'll turn 34 next season and says he plans on playing his contract out, but does that mean we could see the end of Rivers at the end of next season?

More and more guys are starting to retire when they could still have a few good years left in the tank. However, should Rivers hang it up it is not likely going to be because of injury concerns.

Most players would be telling their agents to get the lead out if they were heading in to the final year of their contract, but Rivers doesn't seem to be interested. Instead he wants to see how a few things play out first like the stadium issue and the roster.

At his age he wants to make sure the team is going to have a competitive roster. Some guys would play on for the money, but others are more interested in winning titles. That doesn't seem to be the biggest issue though. He seems much more concerned with the stadium issue.

It sounds like if the team ends up moving to Los Angeles that he is not going to go with it.
“What we’ve established here with my growing family is hard to recreate,” he said. “It’s hard to up and recreate that. I know that moves are part of life. But that certainly is fair to say that (not being sold on moving to Los Angeles) is part of it. The good thing is I’m not under contract in a year where we’d potentially be in Los Angeles.”
The life of a football player and coach is often nomadic, but Rivers has been able to set down roots in San Diego, and it sounds like he has no interest in uprooting them. If that is indeed the case if he doesn't resign with San Diego it appears that he will not go somewhere else, but hang it up.
