Tajh Boyd Possible Heir Apparent For Ben Roethlisberger?

Pittsburgh fans may not like to admit it, but Ben Roethlisberger is not getting any younger. He just had his 33rd birthday on March 2. While his play has been just fine there is always a chance that his skills will decline or he could get that career ending injury. He doesn't exactly take a beating, but he gets hit plenty.

They may need to start planning for the future, and it looks like they could be doing just that with the recently signed Tajh Boyd.

During his four seasons in college he threw for 11904 and 107 touchdowns. From time to time he was a decent running threat as well (914 yards and 20 touchdowns his last two seasons). However, while he did have a solid career in college he was still on the board in the sixth round for the Jets to take. He didn't do enough for Rex Ryan to hold on to him though and he was cut loose.

After being out of the game for a year he was thinking about heading north of the border when he got the call to come to Clemson's Pro Day. When he got their he was introduced to Pittsburgh GM Kevin Colbert who told him the Steelers wanted to sign him as long as he passed a physical.

He did and is now on the roster. That does not mean the team is going to keep him on it of course. Bruce Gradkoswki is the current No. 2 and Landry Jones is the No. 3. To make the final roster he is likely going to have to beat out Jones for the No. 3 job.

Jones has yet to dress for a game so that might not be too hard.

So--is he the QB of the future?

Possibly. He's got the talent. He proved that in school, but could use some time to learn and grow on an NFL bench. At 24, he can afford to do just that, and after being out for a year is probably happy just to be back in the locker room again.
