You would think that a throw to first would be second nature for a starting pitcher, but for Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester that is not necessarily the case. His struggles were put on display recently when he missed his first pick-off attempt after going 66 starts without trying one. Sunday against the Padres he was in a position where he needed to throw to first again, but this time it wasn't a pick-off.
Once again things did not go as planned, but being the wily veteran that he is he figured something out.

When he had trouble getting the ball out of his glove he went ahead and threw his glove and ball to first--and recorded the out!
It may not be pretty, but it worked.
