Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles Hopes the Team Will Draft Him Some Help

For running backs in the NFL the window of effectiveness typically closes around the age of 30 or 31. So if they are going to get paid they need to sign their big money contract in their mid-20's--and then continue playing well enough not to get cut. Jamaal Charles has certainly played well enough not to have to fear being released, but he is a free agent after the 2017 season.

To make sure he plays well enough to be resigned then he hopes the team is going to draft him some help.

He does not mean in the form of a backfield companion, but in some help on the front line.
"I definitely want them to address that," he said. "I'm not a GM, so I can't do that job. But it was challenging last year playing with guys — some got hurt, some got suspended. So it was hard playing. I never knew how crucial it was to my career that I needed linemen."
Last season the Chiefs offensive line rated as the No. 26 unit in the league. There were injury issues on the line that opened enough holes for Chiefs ball carriers to gain a little over 1900 yards, but also gave up 49 sacks and 78 QB hits.

The team has made some adjustments via free agency so far, but Charles would certainly not mind if they made another through the draft. As he gets older the injuries become harder to recover from.

So if the holes were bigger and he was able to get hit by more defensive backs then linebackers not only will he be happy, but he'll be more effective (and the fans and front office will be happy).
