Morgantown Bans Outdoor Furniture in Hopes of Curbing Couch Burning

The art of couch burning is not something done only in Morgantown, West Virginia, the home of the West Virginia Mountaineers, but the act is not identified with the culture of any other school quite like it is for the Mountaineers. Win or lose, if the game was a big one there is a good chance that during the night there will be some furniture burning somewhere in town after the game either in celebration or angst.

City officials have been trying to put a stop to it and are hopeful that their latest measure will make a difference.

On Tuesday the city unanimously passed a law to ban upholstered furniture outdoors. If a patio is enclosed it is okay, but nothing is allowed on open porches or in yards.
“Over the last 10 years, we’ve had over 3,000 street fires because of the quick ability to bring furniture from porches and put it into the streets and put them on fire,” Morgantown City Manager Jeff Mikorski said.
The first offense will result in a warning, but the second can result in a fine of up to $500. Unless college has changed a lot since my day that is a whole lot of money for a college kid especially since you'll still need to pay for a new couch.
