Best Chance to Revive Texas-Texas A&M Rivalry May Be in Dubai

Charlie Strong and Kevin Sumlin are both smart men. They know that the right thing to say is that they would be open to playing their hated rival again. Most of the fans will love to hear it and it makes them appear to be appreciative of history and tradition. However, according to Texas athletic director Steve Patterson the Longhorns are booked solid through 2027.

If that is true it sounds like it will be a really, really long time before the rivalry continues, but there is still hope.

Patterson has made it apparent that he wants to grow the Texas brand on an international level. His basketball team is going to open in Shanghai next season. Patterson has also been trying to push a football game in Mexico City. While they said it was only a fundraising expedition the school had a contingent in Dubai not too long ago.

According to Patterson the Longhorns are going to be in Mexico City by 2020. So--if that is true--he either has a team willing to make the trip or has some wiggle room with the schedule that would allow him to make a change.

A trip overseas for an entire football team and its support staff is going to be expensive. Going to Mexico City would not be as bad, but still pretty costly. Most teams do not have anywhere near the revenue to spend as Texas so the Longhorns might have trouble finding a team willing to play.

That is, unless the other team has an incentive to play; something like a 118-year old rivalry to revive.
