Detroit Lions Giving Ameer Abdullah a Look At Punt Returner

Former Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah has proven himself to be a pretty shifty runner over the years playing for the Cornhuskers. It's the kind of talent that definitely pays off for a running back, but it can be even more valuable for a punt returner.

So it is good Ameer Abdullah has some sweet feet since he may return punts for the Lions.

Abdullah is likely going to be in the mix for a lot of carries in the running game, but it looks like the Lions may try to get him on the field to return punts as well. During Friday's rookie mini-camp practice the team had him work out with the return game (something he hasn't done since his sophomore year of college).
“Pretty good day,” Abdullah said. “Didn’t have much live reps. I’m looking forward to getting more acclimated back there again. It’s different rules in the NFL and better punters.
Whether they keep him there remains to be seen of course, but with last year's returner having fumble-itis and a return average under nine yards the team would love to have someone else return punts.

As far as Abdullah is concerned--he just wants to play.

Here he is getting some work in with the running backs.
