Mike Shanahan Still Has High Hopes For Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins

When Mike Shanahan was the head coach of the Washington Redskins he made some waves when he drafted Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. Why go with Cousins in the fourth round when the team had other needs and RG3 was clearly expected to be the starter? Well--maybe it was because he didn't have much faith in RG3 or drafting Griffin was more Dan Snyder's brain child and he wanted to make sure he got at least one good quarterback in the draft.

While Cousins has not exactly shined in the time he has had, Shanahan still thinks he has a bright future in front of him.

While making an appearance on a radio show he had this to say:
"I think Kirk Cousins will be a big time player for a lot of years in the National Football League," the coach said during an interview with 106.7 The Fan's Grant and Danny show.
Cousins has looked really good at times, but eventually was benched last season after too much inconsistent play. However, to be fair to him the Redskins running game was crap last season and his receivers did not exactly give him a whole lot of help either.

Shanahan went on to say he thinks Cousins would do well in a balanced system.
"I've seen it first hand what he can do. Once he gets a team with a little balance he will have a very succesful NFL career," Shanahan said.
Unless the Redskins ditch RG3--which they could if he has another sub-par season--he may never find out since the Redskins have not expressed any desire to trade Cousins.
