Punt returners have to have some larger than average sized--you know. They are essentially alone on a play with 11 people from the other team screaming downfield looking to take your soul. If that wasn't enough to scare you from trying it, sometimes you are going to get hit pretty darn hard while trying to catch the ball. Since you'll be looking the ball in you will not see it coming.
