Arizona State Mascot May Cost University $123,000 For Jumping On Councilman's Back

Mascots are supposed to be goofy, fun-loving characters capable of providing entertainment when the team is not. They are supposed to do stupid things because people often find them funny. However, they are not supposed to do anything so stupid that it could backfire and cost the university money--but that is exactly what Sparky, the Arizona State mascot has done.

He may have cost the school $123,000.

Back during half time of the school's September 18th game against New Mexico Sparky playfully jumped on the back of Tempe councilman David Schapira. Little did Sparky know, but Schapira had just had back surgery in July. So when he jumped on the councilman's back he caused the injury to flare up again.

Schapira had to spend four days in the hospital to repair and recover from the damage that Sparky caused. The school hasn't tried to deny responsibility, and immediately offered to pay the medical bills.

The incident may cost the school another $123,000. Schapira has filed an injury claim against the school, $96,146 for himself and $27,000 for the city.

It is safe to say whether the school pays it or not the mascots going forward will be told never to jump on anyone ever again.
