That is until Kellen Davis lost sight of a ball that looked like it was overthrown anyway on fourth and four at the seven yard line.
Many wondered why Fitzpatrick was throwing to Kellen Davis, a guy with one catch for a single yard (and a touchdown), rather than his superstar wide receivers, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. According to Fitzpatrick, the play was designed to go to Davis, but it didn't help when he got tangled up with Decker coming off the line.
Fitzpatrick's answer to the question, "Why not throw to Marshall or Decker?" was a pretty good one:
"I mean, he's a professional football player," Fitzpatrick said. "They doubled our best guys. I count on all our guys and I know that all our guys can make plays. That's one that I would love to throw to Brandon. I would love to throw to 'Deck.' The wise decision there with them doubling those guys and wherever it was; I don't regret the read at all. I think it was the right read."Decker accepted a little blame for how the play went:
"We both got caught up. He's trying to release. I probably should've given him a little more time and room to release."The Jets finish the regular season with a rematch against the Bills and will likely need a win in order to get into the playoffs.
