| Old school Mavs |
And I totally dig the guy.
When you think super-rich professional sports team owner you tend to think more of the Robert Kraft types than you do the Mark Cubans; older, rich, conservative white guys in suits whenever they are in the public eye. They are typically more on the quiet side when it comes to speaking out on issues involving the team or league they are in so as to avoid the possibility of damaging the image of the product they want the world to watch--their team.
Of course there are exceptions to the rule, i.e. the late, great Al Davis; Titans owner Bud Adams in his advancing years. The NFL lockout, when many owners were being vocal, is also the exception, but then again since their $9 billion/season product was getting messed with that shouldn't be surprising.
Then you have guys like Mark Cuban. He may be super stinking rich, but he still gives off the every-man vibe (to a degree). I can't remember ever seeing him at a Mavs game in anything but a t-shirt and jeans (he may have, but more often than not its jeans and t-shirt).
His rants have become the thing of legend resulting in a small fortune in fines. He wants to speak his mind though so he does, takes the fine, and then takes it a step further by matching the amount and donating it to a local charity.
It's nice to see a guy in a position like his that is more concerned with the integrity of the game then his bank account. He proved that the other night when he tossed an NBA endorsed product in the trash.
The so-called energy bracelets are garbage. There is absolutely nothing that backs them up scientifically, and one of the manufacturers even had to dish out a hefty chunk of cash after failing to prove all the claims that it made.
It's a little surprising that the NBA would get in bed with a product that is well-known for making false claims yet they have done just that. Cuban saw something similar last February on his reality show "Shark Tank" and wasted little time calling it the trash that it is. Rather than get on bored with the rest of the league and make money (these suckers are not cheap) he's throwing these things out.
Thanks for watching out for us Mark (cause you know we would have bought those darn things). You alright man (now can I borrow a dollar man? My rent is late...).

Cuban is one of the great ones! I don't think it is a coincidence that he played rugby in college and remains a supporter of the sport. He flies in to Bloomington every year for their alumni game (I reffed him 3 years ago), he donated $1 million dollars for them to have a field (and had it named after the guy who coached his team and now coaches a HS program in Zionsville) and he has told leaders in the rugby community that he has up to $20 million set aside to match other sponsors in forming a professional league in the US. We need more Mark Cubans!!!
