Trouble Paying Attention Could Cost Seattle a Shot at the Playoffs

Fans of the Seattle Seahawks are starting to see what they hoped for when Pete Carroll took over the team a few seasons ago. Marshawn Lynch appears to be the running back they haven't had since Shaun Alexander's MVP season. After a slow start, Russell Wilson looks like the quarterback of the future. The defense has been one of the best in the league for the last couple seasons--and it is stocked with young up and coming talent!

Being a young group they are still coming together. Wilson has definitely had some growing pains this season, but appears to be on the right track now. So while that bodes well for the future if the team is going to make the post season this year it will be on the backs of their defense.

When you look at the stats that makes perfect sense. They are currently the No. 5 overall defense in the league; No. 3 against the pass, No. 12 against the run, and No. 3 in scoring (16.8 points/game allowed). Offensively they are No. 27 overall, No. 31 passing, No. 8 rushing, and No. 23 in scoring (19.9 points a game).

However, that looks like it could all change in the near future, and not for the better.

Seattle's two star cornerbacks, Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner, are facing four-game suspensions for taking Adderall, a drug used for those with ADHD, attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder.

Both are claiming innocence of course. There was a story that Sherman had accidentally taken it when he drank from an unnamed teammates water bottle who has a prescription for the drug and had crushed it up in the water. Browner is putting it off on the testers saying that they screwed up his sample.

Should the Seahawks lose the duo it will seriously impact their playoff chances or their chance of doing much in the playoffs. There is no way that they will catch the San Francisco 49ers for the division lead so they have to get a wildcard spot. Green Bay has a line on one spot right now at 7-4; the NFC has three teams including Seattle that are 6-5.

With the schedule they have remaining losing their top two defenders could be costly. Chicago and San Francisco will both be tough. St. Louis is winnable, but should Sam Bradford catch fire he could torch a Seattle secondary minus Sherman and Browner. Arizona will likely not be much trouble, but Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bills could be a lot like the Rams.

A likely finish would see the Seahawks with an 8-8 record after beating Arizona, Buffalo, and St. Louis while losing to Chicago and San Francisco. It will probably not be good enough for the post season. They will have their dynamic duo in Chicago making a win there possible, but that means the team will be without them for a playoff game unless they start their suspensions the following week.

The tricky part here as far as the fans are concerned is whether it was actually Adderall that they are facing suspensions for. Since the NFL does not say what guys test positive for it could be steroids, but the players caught claim it's Adderall publicly in order to not damage their reputations with the fans.

Whatever it is these guys did or did not take, it could prove costly to the whole team when all is said and done. I hope it was worth it (sarcasm completely intended).
