I wish I could buy a professional sports franchise someday just so I could do what Tom Benson has done--change the name.
I'm lying. Having the best seat in the house would be much more fulfilling than being able to change the name, but being able to change the name would be pretty cool too. Anyway...
When I heard the New Orleans Hornets were going to be renamed the Pelicans I did what most people did--I laughed. It seem like kind of a silly name right? There is actually a pretty decent amount of history behind the choice. Yahoo does a pretty good job of explaining it so if you want to read it check it out here.
All in all I think the logo looks pretty good. The colors are a little on the safe side, but this is the big time. Minor league teams can get away with being a little more adventurous.
I'll admit it--I wanted to see Mardi Gras colors. Could you just imagine the environment at home games if they did go that route? You know some fools would be tempted to treat game night like Mardi Gras--beads flying, shirts going up, folks "sharing" their bodies with the viewing public...you know--Mardi Gras.
The new name and logo will not be used until next season.
