This is going to be a tough one to call. In this contest you really have the two best teams in football. I mean these guys are good at everything. The 49ers have the No. defense in the league and the No. 11 offense. Baltimore has the No. 17 defense and the No. 16 offense.
Okay. so Baltimore's numbers are not great, but they did change offensive coordinators late in the season, and on defense they were missing guys--major players--all season. That improvement was evident in the post season of course (heck, they are in the Super Bowl after all). Out of the 12 teams they rank No. 6 on defense and No. 5 on offense.
San Francisco made some late changes as well. Colin Kaepernick might start off slow with the offense, but the 49ers do have the No. 1 unit of the post season (and No. 7 on defense).
But being a football guy I now there is a lot more to the game than stats. There is that certain something that a team will have that the other will not; a reserve that they are able to tap when push comes to shove. Some call it competitive spirit. Others say it is the desire to win. My old O-line coach just said you have to be meaner than the other guy.
Whatever it is, you can't measure it. You can't plan for it. You can't know it's there until after you ave witnessed it in action.
That is what makes game predictions so tricky and challenging. No matter what the data says, it all comes down to your gut. Good thing for me is that being a FatMan I have a rather substantial gut.
And the last time it was in San Francisco it was filled up at this wonderful place called Ghirardelli Square--the things those people did with chocolate!
So for that reason and that reason alone I pick the 49ers.
I'm a FatMan. What did you expect?
