Houston Texans J.J Watt Named Defensive Player of the Year
There were three guys that offensive lineman and quarterbacks absolutely hated to face this past season, Von Miller of the Denver Broncos, Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers, and J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans.
This is probably one of those awards that if any of the three had won folks would have though he deserved it, but the voters thought Watt was easily the man this year with 49 of 50 votes. His 20.5 sacks and 16 pass deflections made quarterbacks nervous every time they thought about passing against the Texans, and even had him in contention for league MVP.
Von Miller and Aldon Smith both had stellar seasons. Smith had a shot at breaking Michael Strahan's single season sack record, but got shut out the last three games to finish with 19.5. Miller, improved off his 11.5 sack rookie season to finish with 18.5 this year.
All three players had great seasons; award worthy for sure. However, this season's candidates are special, and not just because of their performances. All three are just second year players.
They've got a whole lot of football yet to play. Anyone want to bet we'll see them contend for this award again?
