Longhorns Need to Look to Their Youth in 2013

Mack Brown is confident about what his team can do this coming season and he should be. With a veteran laden squad returning the Longhorns should be able to build off of last season’s 9-4 finish and compete for the Big 12 crown once again.




"…I do think that we are headed back in the right direction and that we have another run in us, and that I want them (the Texas fans) to hang on and be positive and continue to love their school and they are going to enjoy the ride," Brown said.

There should certainly be a ride to enjoy. With their quarterback, top three running backs, top two receivers, top five offensive linemen, and nine defensive starters coming back Brown has a veteran heavy roster that should do well.

But if he really wants to do well he needs to lean on two of his youngest players—sophomore running back Jonathan Gray and freshman quarterback Tyrone Swoopes.

Gray came in as one of the top recruits in the nation after averaging over 11 yards a carry his senior season in Aledo, TX. For the Longhorns he was not needed right off the bat with Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron already splitting carries in the back field.

While the Brown and Bergeron combo was good Gray was better. When he finally got the chance to be the featured back against Kansas he gave fans a taste of what he could do. David Ash was having a poor night, but Gray kept the team in the game with 111 yards on 18 carries....
