Tragedy Strikes on Texas Tech Campus

There has been a lot of attention on the Texas Tech Red Raiders this off-season with former Red Raider Kliff Kingsbury coming home to (hopefully) lead the team to glory. The attention is off the football teanow as the Lubbock community mourns a tragic death that occurred on campus Saturday.

A local boy by the name of Miguel Martinez was playing with some friends when he somehow became impaled on the horns of a bull statue on the Texas Tech campus. It is not clear exactly how the accident happened, if slipped, tripped or if he was trying to jump the statue.

Miguel had been staying the night at a friends house, and the kids were out late playing in an effort to run off some energy and go to bed. At one point they heard a loud thump. The natural assumption was that someone had run into the statue, but instead it was Miguel being impaled on a horn.

According to reports he was able to get himself off the horn, turned around, and called for help.
"I just laid there beside him. I put my jacket over him and just held him tight and told him I loved him," Jeremy Warren, one of the other kids playing, said. "He was like a big brother to me."
The university has said they will review the incident and to see what if any security/safety related changes they can make to try and keep another incident from ever occurring.
