BYU Wasted No Time in Accepting Bowl Bid

College football is no longer just for Saturdays anymore. Now we have games on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays. With the NFL playing on Sunday and Monday the NCAA stays away from those two days so you have to think that Wednesdays are not far behind.

Friday night saw Boise State and BYU take the field, and it was another dominant performance by the Cougars.

After getting out to a 24-3 halftime lead the team was able to coast to a 37-20 victory. BYU quarterback Taysom Hill led the way with 410 combined yards (339 passing, 71 rushing) of offense and four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). 

Hill had little trouble marching the team up and down the field, but he did get some help from the defense in the form of four Boise State turnovers. 

The win made the Cougars bowl eligible and the school wasted no time in accepting a bid to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco.

The move is somewhat of a surprise. BYU has been playing some really good football this season. With Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Idaho St., and Nevada still to play the team could easily go 2-2--if not better. A record of 8-4 or 9-3 could have gotten the team an invite to a higher profile game.

I suppose by not accepting it the team does take the risk that they will take a flop and end the season 6-6 or 7-5. That would make them bowl eligible, but likely headed to an even lower profile game than the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

By not accepting a bid yet the team also stays hungry. There is no conference title as an independent. They are not going to factor into the national title picture. That leaves the bowl game, but with that already sewed up there is only pride.

That should be enough, but will it? I guess we'll find out next week when they take on Wisconsin.
