City Councilmen Want to Shut Down Michigan Stadium Billboard

The Michigan Wolverines are one of the most historic, well-known, and beloved programs in college football. The student body is fanatical about their team. Alumni come from miles around to be one of thousands packing Michigan Stadium for home games. So when the school erected a $2.8 million digital sign out in front of the stadium it made sense.

A team and fan base like the Michigan Faithful deserve something like this--and now members of the city council want to turn it off.

According to some in the Ann Arbor City Council the sign is too distracting and should be either decommissioned or have its use limited.

"We've gotten a lot of emails from residents who are rightfully upset about this. I think they feel it's a blight on the landscape,"Margie Teall said. "I've noticed going over the bridge, it's almost impossible not to look at the billboard, and I worry about that crosswalk that's at the foot of the bridge."

The University is not commenting on the proposal that is expected to be introduced when the council meets on November 7, but the school has said that the sign was placed across the street from a golf course in order to cut down on the distraction.

This will be a tough sell for the councilmen. Folks in Ann Arbor love their team and the university just spent a good chunk of change to get the sign put up. It is not going to be too eager to stop using it or even limit its use.

I could see where a large, constantly changing sign can be a distraction to drivers, but I can't help but thing the solution to the issue is pretty simple.

Don't look.
We are not bugs and the sign is not a bug zapper. It is not hypnotic and it does not force you too stare at it so long you lose control of your car.

If you are afraid to look--don't look.

  1. The sign was just a really, really bad idea from the beginning. Anyone remotely interested in the secondary sports schedules knows where to find them. Overall I think Dave Brandon has done a great job w/ Michigan athletics....except this. It is a complete waste of $2 plus million dollars...

    1. That's a lot of money to just shut it down. I don't know a lot about these kinds of things but can it be moved?
