Geno Smith Being Named No. 1 Going into Camp Only a Formality

The New York Jets have made a splash during the off-season with some big free agent pick-ups. Some believe that Gang Green could actually be competitive and make some noise next season—and they could. However, while the team may be in a better position of next season the future is in question.

Why? Because they signed Michael Vick.

@NFLESPNcom
When Geno Smith was drafted the expectation was for him to be the quarterback of the future (Mark Sanchez's days were numbered). At time last season he looked pretty good—in spite of poor play calling, a sub-par offensive line, and little talent at the skill positions.

He also had a few games where he looked like absolute crap--but the ability is there.

Smith needs time to develop and improve, but with Michael Vick in camp he will probably not get it. The team has announced that he is the No. 1 QB heading in to camp, but he’s not going to keep the job. Right now Michael Vick—even with his turnover issues—is a better quarterback and will give the Jets a better chance to win.

Should Vick be named No. 1 and stay healthy he has another two or three seasons in him pushing the Gene Smith era out to when it will be time negotiate an extension with Smith not ready to play. If he works his behind off while backing up Vick maybe he could be in a position to play at that time, but his work ethic was one of the knocks on him coming out of West Virginia.

Will he do the work without getting the playing time? Hopefully, but who knows.

So yeah, maybe for the next season or two the Jets will be in good shape, but then it will be back to the drawing board—again.
