Is the SEC Taking Over the Big Three in College Sports?

When the Final Four is over there is a good chance that history will be made. For only the third time since 1985 (when the bracket expanded) the two finalists might end up being from the same conference. In fact, with both Florida and Kentucky favored it is expected to happen.

Should it there is a very real question that may need answering: Is the SEC taking over college sports big three--football, baseball, and basketball?

The SEC's dominance of college football has been well documented; eight of the last 11 national champions are SEC teams. Florida State finally brought an end to the seven year hold the conference had on the title, but the three of the top five teams were still from the SEC.

SEC teams have seen a lot of success in college baseball as well the last few years with three of the last five national champions calling the conference home. After a two-year absence from the top spot there is a good chance the conference will return to the top this season. South Carolina (who won two of the aforementioned three titles) is ranked No. 3 and got seven No. 1 votes in the last poll (Vanderbilt is ranked No. 4).

That leaves basketball.

Even if Florida and Kentucky do make it to the national title game you can't really say the SEC is dominating college basketball. Thanks to the one and done philosophy that dominates the college hoops landscape it is going to be hard for a team to stay on top year after year. Yeah, the same teams are often in the hunt, but since 2000 there have been ten different champions.

Coincidentally, the only back to back champion was Florida.

So is the SEC taking over college sports big three? Not yet--but if the rest of the country isn't careful it might.
