Fast forward about a month and a lot of the luster has come off Mullen's halo thanks to a dirty deed the coach has committed.
via Bleacher Report |
After encouraging Chason Virgil, a standout Texas high school quarterback, to graduate early so he could enroll in the spring Mullen pulled his scholarship. So far no reason has been given, but Mullen has been widely bashed for the move since Virgil passed on many other offers and altered his senior year at Mullen's urging.
This will be a move that will likely keep Mullen at Mississippi State since schools will not be as eager to sign a head coach that will have a hard time recruiting in one of the most fertile states in the nation. Recruits need to be able to trust their soon to be college coach. Mullen has now given every recruit a reason to doubt him.
The dirty deed has already caused one Texas recruit to decommit from Mississippi State:
After speaking with my parents and coaches, I have decided to de-commit from Mississippi State and open up my recruitment.

What will be interesting to see is how this affects his ability to recruit in other states going forward. If Mullen is willing to do something like this to one recruit what's to say he will not do it again? Nothing.
Kids might not think about it, but Mullen is going to have some serious explaining to do to the moms and dads of recruits afraid the same is going to happen to their son.
