Auburn QB Nick Marshall Moving to Defensive Back for the NFL Draft

When Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson switched positions for the Senior Bowl and the NFL Draft it was considered a bold but necessary choice. He was a good quarterback in college, but not good enough to make it in the NFL. He was, however, a great athlete. It appears that another college quarterback is going to follow his lead.

Auburn's Nick Marshall has decided to make the switch to defensive back.

The news began to spread on Twitter Tuesday morning:

As crazy as it might seem there is a method to the madness here. When he signed with Georgia coming out of high school it was to play cornerback. He made the switch to quarterback when he transferred to a community college and then excelled in the position the last two years at Auburn.

So why switch?

Without speaking directly to Marshall I would guess that it is so he can have more of an opportunity to make the team and play. Teams use more cornerbacks than quarterbacks so there is definitely more opportunity.

With the competition at quarterback in the draft and the need being what it is chances are he would have been a late round pick as a quarterback. As an incredible athlete that hasn't lined up at cornerback in three years chances are he will be a late round pick as well.

If he does happen to go undrafted he will make it in to camp with someone. Even if he doesn't make it in to a teams defensive back rotation with his athleticism special teams could how he makes the team.

At quarterback there are not many options, but at defensive back there are many. Good move Marshall.
