While he escaped a suspension, he did not escape punishment all together.
The league office has decided to fine Ward $10,000 for the punch, but not suspend him.
Ward has defended himself by saying he was retaliating for Macklin's attempt at a cheap shot from the play before, but says that he did not intend to punch Macklin. He did not believe that he did, but admitted that it looks like he was winding up in the video.
He went on to justify his actions by saying the Broncos played dirty last time and continued to do so in last week's game.
Macklin took to Twitter to respond to Ward's accusation:
I'm cheap and dirty but you got ejected....oh ok makes sense

Whether he was retaliating or not doesn't matter, and neither does his intention. The ref thought he looked guilty, and apparently the league office couldn't see any reason to disagree. As a professional he should be better at controlling his emotions than that.
Now every team knows that you can get inside his head.
