Rice has had a football program for years; just not a very good one most of the time. Of the school's 18 coaches, only four had winning records over the duration of their tenure (one of them a single season 7-6; Todd Graham in '06). There hasn't been a lot to cheer about other than the graduation rate.
Fans and alumni got something to cheer about in the Armed Forces Bowl, and it had nothing to do with wearing a cap and gown. After losing their quarterback, Taylor McHargue, to a concussion in the first half freshman Driphus Jackson came on to throw for 264 yards and two touchdowns.
As good as his play was, it wasn't him that led the team to victory. That honor goes to the defense who held the Falcons to just 53 yards in the second half; 32 of it came on the opening drive of the half.

Pinstripe Bowl (Dec 29): Syracuse 38 West Virginia 14
Does anyone other than me remember reading an article after the first five or six weeks of the season that asked if a team could have a kick *ss offense and a really bad defense, but still win the national title?
Maybe what the writer could have been asking about the West Virginia Mountaineers is if they were really as good against real competition as they appeared to be against poor teams (sorry Marshall, James Madison, and Maryland; you guys don't belong with the big boys). Wins against Texas and Baylor made the answer appear to be yes.
Talk about deceiving.
WVU managed to play their way into a bowl game, but they kind of forgot to play in it once they got there. Maybe since it was cold and snowy they were too busy looking for couches to burn. All they needed to do to warm up was put their hands next to Syracuse running back Prince-Tyson Gulley's shoes; they had to be burning since the an racked up 267 yards of all-purpose yards including 217 on the ground.
Fight Hunger Bowl (Dec 29): Arizona State 62 Navy 28
It just wasn't a good day for the bowl eligible football teams of our nation's service academies.
The Midshipmen from the Naval Academy were never really in this game. ASU got ahead of the guys early with three first quarter touchdowns. Navy is a pretty decent running team, but when they need to pass in order to come from behind, well--they aren't that good at it.
If you really need some kind of indicator to tell you how the day was for Navy--Yahoo! Sports recap of the game lists defensive back Chris Swain as the player of the game with three carries for 88 yards and 1 TD.
It's all good boys. We still have nothing but love and appreciation for you and the sacrifices you make.
