Catching Up With the Bowl Games: Gator and Heart of Dallas

Gator Bowl (Jan 1): Northwestern 34     Mississippi State 20

I have to wonder what Northwestern is going to do with the ole stuffed monkey that symbolized their inability to win a bowl game for over half a century now that they've finally won one.

Yes, the drought going back to 1949 and covering nine games (okay, so N'western hasn't been that good all the time) is over. The end of it was never really in doubt Tuesday. Mississippi State was able to tie the game up after the Wildcats got out to an early 13-0 lead with a field goal early in the third quarter, but then N'Western responded with  a pair of touchdowns to establish control once again.

Heart of Dallas Bowl (Jan 1): Oklahoma State 58     Purdue 14

This game was a perfect example of why a team should at least have a winning record in order to be bowl eligible. At the least they should have to have one heck of a tough schedule to be considered eligible at 6-6 or if they are going to be in a bowl game it should not be a game broadcast on New Year's Day.

Bowl games may be spread out over the first week of the new year now, but New Year's Day is still a marquee day. It is the one where everyone has the day off and will be looking to recover from the party the night before while watching GOOD football--not the stinker that Purdue put on today.

My apologies to the Purdue fans out there, but if you guys are honest with yourselves (and not just loyal fans) you know this team had no business playing on Jan 1.
