We are one week into the post season or one week into the off-season depending on your perspective. With the completion of the Washington/Seattle game Sunday the next round of combatants is set meaning there are four more teams now 'enjoying' their off-season.
For the 20 teams that started a week ago there have been seven that have been crazy busy trying to figure out who the next leader is going to be for their team. Seven teams axed their head coach on Black Monday and so far only three have hired new guys.
Andy Reid won the loser lottery when he was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs. If there is any team in the NFL on the verge of breaking out it is the Chiefs. These guys have a host of young talent; they just need a quarterback and someone that can put it all together. Hopefully now that they have one of those two things they will not lose Dwayne Bowe this off-season.
Reid has proven he can do it before; there had to be a reason why the Eagles kept him 14 years, right? With the talent the Chiefs have and the first pick in the draft next year I'd say its safe to say things are looking up for Reid and the Chiefs.
Buffalo has pulled their next head coach from the college ranks poaching Doug Marrone from near by Syracuse. Marrone is no stranger to the NFL having been hired by Syracuse after a three year stint as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2006-08).
His hire could stave off the release or trade of Ryan Fitzpatrick; at least until the end of next season. Marrone proved he can do wonders with a talented player in New Orleans. Prior to Drew Brees coming to town in '06 Brees was an average QB at best in San Diego. After a few years under Marrone the man has become one of the best passers in the league.
Those are the only two hires so far. There have been a number of interviews, and rumors of lots of guys being considered. Right now the vast majority of those all seem to be just interviews or teams requesting permission to interview; not a whole lot of substance yet.
Where there is some substance is in the guys that do not want to leave the college ranks yet.
Rumor Chip Kelly heading to Cleveland at the start of the weekend; there were some that reported it as a virtual lock. Sunday morning word hit the internet that Oregon booster Mr. Nike (Phil Knight) was making his pitch to keep Kelly with the Ducks. By time the Washington/Seattle game was over the news broke that he is staying put.
Why not? In the Ducks he has a young group of players that are going to be kicking some serious behind next season and likely into the next (at least) as well. When a team establishes its dominance like his has talented recruits from all over the nation will flock to Oregon making sure that they are able to reload as guys graduate or leave early (for the NFL).
Penn State's Bill O'Brien was a hot candidate to move into an NFL head coaching job, but he has stated his intention to stay with the Nittany Lions.
Alabama's Nick Saban and Notre Dame's Brian Kelly are hot commodities as well. Both have been dodging the question at most of the BCS Championship media sessions. Recently Kelly has stated he isn't going anywhere. Saban says he isn't interested.
For Kelly I can see that he may want to stick around South Bend a little longer. He hasn't been playing with the big dogs as long as Saban and could use a little more seasoning before making the jump into the NFL.
Saban on the other hand absolutely should if the Crimson Tide win Monday night. That will make three national titles in four years. What else does he have to prove in Alabama? He has mastered the college ranks as a coach. The next step is obvious--he has to go to the NFL and redeem himself from his earlier fiasco.
