Alex Smith Headed to Chiefs?

It had to happen, and it appears that it now will--San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is going to be going to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith has had a rough go of it for most of his career in San Francisco since being drafted in the first round out of Utah in 2005 with the team changing offensive coordinators almost every season. Under the guidance of Jim Harbaugh he began to show the promise he has been though to have.

Even though he managed to lead the San Francisco 49ers to the playoffs last season, and had them on track to do the same this season before he was injured (and lost his job) there was not a lot of faith in his ability.

On paper Smith looked great. He was completing more than 70 percent of his passes, had a rating over 100, and the team was 6-2-1 under him prior to the injury (and 13-3 in '11).

While some of the success had to be attributed to Smith's play there were many that thought he held the team back; that it was the team making him look good. With the No. 2 defense according to points allowed the last two seasons there is an argument there.

The emergence of Colin Kaepernick made Smith expendable, and it appears that the Kansas City Chiefs are going to give him a fresh start. Nothing can happen officially till March 12 when free agency begins, but it would be a surprise to see this deal not happen.

What exactly this will mean for Matt Cassell remains to be seen (but the FatMan will be watching).
