The move comes a day after losing Welker to the Denver Broncos and adding Danny Amendola.
New England has been on of those teams that went with the running back by committee approach in recent years, partially because they focused on the Tom Brady-led passing attack and didn't need it and partially because they didn't have a feature back to plug into the role.
Stevan Ridley seemed to latch onto the role of feature running back last season, but with Washington's explosiveness in the open-field it would not be surprising to seem him worked into the backfield rotation some.
Whenever he's had at least 50 carries in a season he's averaged close to or more than five yards a carry.
Unless the Patriots get rid of either Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden, or Danny Woodhead he probably will not see too much time in the backfield. They will want him to work his magic on returns instead.
