Milwaukee Brewers SS Jean Segura Gets Confused and Steals First--Legally!

Right when you think you understand everything about the game-- you find out that someone can theoretically steal first!

In this case, Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura steals second and after Ryan Braun walks the two try a double steal. The Cubs play it perfectly though with a solid throw by Shawn Camp to pick off Segura, but he retreats back to second without getting tagged.

That's where it gets funky.

Braun had already made it there. Now in a case like this you would expect Braun to either retreat or both of them to just stand there while one gets tagged out. Since Segura was the lead runner when he touched the bag again Braun became out.

So the play is over, right? Nope!

Segura appears to be running to the dugout which does put him back into play. Whether he realized his goof and knew he had a way out is not known, but he does scamper to the bag towards the end. The Cubs were not looking to make a play on him so no one was in position.

The strange thing is what he did--run the bags in reverse--is actually legal.

Huh. Right when you think you know all the rules. It turns out the kids at the T-ball game were playing it right after all!

    1. That would sure put an interesting twist on the game; maybe they'd let him bat again.

    1. He has actually been in 61 games as of the end of action 4/21. I'll cut him some slack for being a youngster, but the dude has been playing the game his whole life--he doesn't get much slack.

I didn't think I was that harsh anyway. Heck, maybe he's smarter than the rest of us since at least at the end he ran with a purpose--like he knew the rule or his 1st base coach told him--and was ultimately safe!

  3. Just curious, if you are trying to make a travesty of the game, are you out?

    1. There are so many guys that would never play if that was the case.
