Yoenis Cespedes Wins 2013 Home Run Derby in Epic Fashion

When the home run derby squads were announced you had to wonder when Robinson Cano only named two other guys for the American League side. We can only assume that it was because the rest of the AL All-Star squad wasn't interested.

Little did he know that the guy he would get--Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes-- to fill the final slot would put on a show for the ages and win the whole darn thing.

Between the two teams the contestants were an intriguing bunch. On the AL side you had two past champions, the current MLB home run leader, and one of the most exciting young talents in the game. For the NL you had a group of really good hitters highlighted by one of the most electric players in baseball--Bryce Harper.

Fans were treated to a solid competition from the start with Prince Fielder launching some bombs early, but only managing five. Bryce Harper and Chris Davis each knocked out eight and Michael Cuddyer had seven. Both captains fizzled out (David Wright, 5; Robinson Cano, 4). Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez nailed six, but it wasn't enough to move on.

The show belonged to the man that would go on to win it all, Yoenis Cespedes, who knocked out an awesome 17 in the first round!



Bryce Harper would beat out Chris Davis (12) and Michael Cuddyer (15) with another eight in the second round to give him 16 to move on to the finals against Cespedis (23 total).

The Nationals star went first in the finals and set a pretty good mark for Cespedis to beat with another eight home run round giving him 24 for the contest. When you are hot you are hot though; Cespedides still had five outs to spare when he hit the winning home run!
