Crazy Colts Fan - Former Baltimore Colts Great Art Donovan Passes Away At the Age of 89

The Colts family lost a great one on Sunday, August 4, when the first Colt to ever get enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Art Donovan, passed away. He was 89.

According to the Baltimore Sun he passes away from a respiratory ailment. He was in hospice care likely meaning that he had been sick for some time. When he passed his wife, Dorothy, was right by his side and he was surrounded by several family members.

He last played in 1961, but thanks to an engaging personality and a knack for telling stories--and he had plenty of them--helped him remain a popular figure for sometime after his career ended. Letterman used to like to have him on the show (he was on ten times) and he even served as a guest commentator at the WWF 1994 King of the Ring (although he didn't exactly do a great job at it by wrestling standards).

"Artie made a career out of telling people everything that he'd done right — and wrong — in football," said Ordell Braase, his teammate on the field and in the broadcast studio. "The diversity of his appeal was amazing. Everyone wanted to hug 'Fatso,' from young girls to little old ladies."

Fatso? That was actually something he called himself. It stems from one of the man stories he liked to tell about his playing days....
