Football Fans in Texas Lose Two Legends in Less Than a Week

Don’t be surprised if flags are flying at half-mast across the state of Texas with the passing of two football legends, Bum Phillips and Bud Adams.

Folks in Texas love football. Many would say that if there is a stronger word than love that it would still not measure how they feel about the game. Crazy? Maybe, but that is just how it is in the Lone Star State.

When two legends pass fans are going to mourn.

Friday (October 18) saw former Houston Oilers Head Coach Bum Phillips pass away at the age of 90 on his ranch in Goliad, Texas. Monday morning (October 21) the owner of those Houston Oilers—now Tennessee Titans—Bud Adams passed away as well. Like Phillips, he was 90 years old.

From 1975-80 Bum Phillips and his trademark cowboy hat led the team to a 59-38 record; the best in franchise history. Much like Tom Landry’s fedora, his cowboy hat was a symbol and something you rarely saw him without unless the team was playing in a dome stadium. When asked about it he would quote his mother and say, "Mama always said that if it can't rain on you, you're indoors."

A very popular figure in the state there were many fans that never forgave Adams when he unceremoniously fired the coach following a third straight playoff exit to the eventual Super Bowl champion.
