Nick Saban Does Have a New Job...Just Not the One Everyone is Talking About

The internet has been going crazy over the last day or so over the job status of Texas Longhorns Head Coach Mack Brown and Alabama's Nick Saban. From hour to hour it appeared to change Tuesday with everyone claiming they were hearing something from someone in the know--but a day later Brown still has a job and Saban is coaching the Crimson Tide.

Saban has, however, taken another gig; one that I wouldn't be surprised if he ditched both Alabama and Texas for someday...

Saban is going to be working for good ole ESPN during the final BCS title game January 6.

While he is not the most inviting or entertaining person to watch during a press conference I think he could be quite different as a studio personality. As a coach you want to give the press some info while not telling them anything important that could help opponents. As a commentator it is going to be all about talking football and providing as much insight as humanly possible.

With his track record as a coach I think it is reasonable to assume that he could provide some pretty incredible insight. The trick here of course is that he'd end up walking away from coaching all together; something I'm sure most people think will never happen.

I think he might--someday.

Part of the argument for the pro-Saban to Texas folks is that he's tired of the fans in Alabama. Several times this season he took issue with the students leaving early. While the fans in Texas are pretty fanatical about their football, what's to say that they will not do the same after a couple championships when the team is up by only 28 over a mediocre opponent?

Nothing. In fact, it probably will happen should he choose to leave Alabama for Texas. Being the smart guy that he is I am sure Saban knows this too.

So what does one of the best minds in college football do to stay in the game, be paid well (but not the same as coaching), and forego the stress of recruiting, dealing with fans, and making boosters happy?

Television.

Right now it is just a one day gig--Saban joining the crew for the BCS Championship--but should it go well fans should not be surprised to see Saban pull a Lou Holtz and leave the sideline for a studio desk.
