The game was expected to be about the defenses of both schools. After the first half it appeared that was not going to be the case. Both offense were making plays and the defenses were stuck playing catch up. However, all that changed in the second half--for Michigan State at least.

Michigan State slowly began to open a gap against Stanford in the second half buoyed by a strong performance by the defense. With the game tied early in the second half this interception kept Stanford from getting any momentum going.

Late in the third quarter--with the game still tied--the first turnover on downs put an end to a Stanford threat.

The big play came late in the game. With Stanford driving and Michigan State holding on to a slim 24-20 lead the defense hold strong yet again on a crucial fourth down play!

Outside of a field goal late in the fourth quarter the Michigan State defense pretty much shut down the Stanford offense. All the defense in the world means nothing of course without the offense putting some points on the board.
Connor Cook had a pretty good game throwing for 332 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He did a great job of keeping the offense moving in the second half--and the Stanford offense off the field. In my mind, the key play on offense came towards the end of the first half.

After Stanford returned an interception for a touchdown the Spartans really needed to answer with a scoring drive, and they did just that.
There is one play the team did screw up pretty bad though--the Gatorade Bath.

Yeah--you know Coach is laughing at 'em.
Well done Spartans. Well done indeed.
