Penn State Offer Head Coaching Job to Vanderbilt's James Franklin?

Vanderbilt's James Franklin has been one of the hottest names in football in recent weeks. The Commodores had another solid year under Franklin. They won their second bowl game in a row, finishing ranked for two consecutive seasons, won nine games--all things the program had never accomplished before.

Fans love him, players love him, and he wins. No wonder he's in demand.

If the rumor is to be believed Penn State wants to make him their next head coach. According to Donnie Collins from the Times Tribune:

Two sources close to Penn State's program confirmed to The Times-Tribune late Wednesday night that Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin was offered the head coaching position during an hours-long meeting with the university's search committee in Destin, Fla. Both sources, who spoke on anonymity because no official announcement had been made, said Franklin is expected to either accept or reject the job today [Thursday].

I always take anything that claims to have 'sources' with a grain of salt. Yes, they do often end up being correct, but they seem to be wrong just as much. Good thing is we'll find out pretty soon if these sources are right.

I think he's one of the best coaches in football today so I can understand why Penn State would want him. The sad part is what his departure could do to the Vanderbilt program. Prior to his arrival it has been some time since the Commodores had a winning season. They finished 7-6 in 2008, but before that the last winning season was 1982.
