So--did they?
Yes.
Clowney's unofficial time in his first run was a 4.47 seconds and 4.48 in his second. Over the weekend there was talk that he was hitting 4.46 in his work outs so these times were right in line with the rumors.
The NFL has yet to say his official time so to put his 40 in to perspective let's take advantage of modern technology and see how he would do against Johnny Manziel:
Manziel had an official time of 4.68. The gap that Clowney has could easily account for .1 of a second; maybe .15, but I don't know about .21 though. To get a better picture check out Clowney vs. De'Anthony Thomas:
Thomas had an official time of 4.50. Clowney was right on his heels so maybe a 4.55 perhaps? There are probably going to be plenty of folks that are going to criticize him for not running in the 4.4 range like he said, but let's be real here folks. We have a 260+ pound man that has run a 4.5ish 40-yard dash.
That's pretty freaking awesome.
