Jerry Jones Didn't Want Elvis Presley (aka Johnny Manziel) Taking the Spotlight Away From Him

The world wanted Jerry Jones to pick up Johnny Manziel if he was actually available when it came time for the Cowboys to make a pick Thursday night. We were all simply dying to see Jerry's team become Johnny's--and you know it would have.

But Jerry passed on Johnny Football for an interesting reason--he was too much like Elvis Presley.

Jones referred to Manziel as Elvis Presley for a simple reason--Johnny Football is larger than life. He knew that if he picked 'Elvis' and brought him to his team--where everything is larger than life--that the internet would have exploded and the spotlight would be so bright it would make Dallas look like Alaska when the sun never goes down.

So did Jerry actually do something smart?

There was no need to draft Manziel; it would have been a purely marketing ploy as long as Tony Romo is around (or at least until he throws another fourth quarter interception). So instead of picking a guy that would sit on the bench for a few years he made a great pick by taking Notre Dame's Zach Martin instead (offensive lineman).

However, there is another explanation--Jones didn't want Johnny Football to take over the spotlight.

Ever since he bought the team Jones has put himself front and center. If something good happened--he made sure the world knew he was responsible for setting it up. The Cowboys are known as Jerry's team; the stadium--the House that Jerry Built.

Had he drafted Manziel the spotlight on Johnny Football would have put Tim Tebow's to shame. When he got in to a game after another Romo interception put the game out of reach and he nearly brought the team back with his heroics--it would no longer be the House that Jerry Built.

It would be Johnny's Crib.

Jones and his ego couldn't handle something like that. Just ask Jimmy Johnson.
