But one of his former players--Antonio Cromartie--knows why he did it.

"I think it's all wanting to make up a story, because their team is not getting talked about a lot as other teams," Cromartie said, via ESPN.Ummm...they are not getting talked about? Does he read the paper or surf the net from time to time? Of the 32 teams in the league the Browns are one of the most talked about teams in the league. True--it's mostly about Johnny Manziel, but the Browns are almost constantly in the news now.
Cromartie clearly doesn't know what he is talking about which makes this little tale a little ironic. Here we have a guy claiming another guy has an ulterior motive when he in fact has one.
He doesn't like Pettine.
"I've been around Pettine. Pettine is that kind of person," Cromartie said. "I've been around him for my first three years in New York. I think it's, you know, something he wants to build about."I'm all for a little smack talk. Heck, it gives me something to write about, but in this case Cromartie might want to bone up on current events before doing so. Maybe then he can at least be topical and on point.
Instead he just looks foolish.
