Kansas City Chiefs Have Not Won With QB They Drafted Since 1987

Back in 1987 FOX made it's prime time debut (loved Married With Children). Prozac made its debut, the downfall of televangelist Jim Baker began, the world saw its first supernova with the naked eye since the early 1600's, George Michael released Faith, Michael Jackson released Bad, and we watched the first Lethal Weapon.

It was also the last time that a quarterback that the Kansas City Chiefs drafted won a game for the Chiefs.

It seems kind of hard to believe, but the last QB the Chiefs drafted that won a game for the team was Todd Blackledge (yes, the game announcer). The team drafted him in the Great Quarterback Draft of 1983--the one that produced Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, and John Elway--but the term greatness never really applied to him.

Blackledge lasted five seasons with the team starting in just 24 games. Since than the team drafted the following quarterbacks:
  • Doug Hudson in the seventh round in 1987
  • Danny McManus in the 11th round in 1988
  • Mike Elkins in the second round in 1989
  • Matt Blundin in the second round in 1992
  • Steve Matthews in the seventh round in 1994
  • Steve Stenstrom in the fourth round in 1995
  • Pat Barnes in the fourth round in 1997
  • James Kilian in the seventh round in 2005
  • Brodie Croyle in the third round in 2006
  • Ricky Stanzi in the fifth round in 2011
Not a single one ever won a game for KC; could be why only diehard Chiefs fans will even know who most of them are.

Luckily free agency and trades are allowed--especially with the San Francisco 49ers. Over the years the team has had five former San Francisco quarterbacks join the team:
  • Steve Deberg (played for 49ers right before they drafted Joe Montana)
  • Joe Montana (lead Chiefs to last playoff win)
  • Steve Bono
  • Elvis Grbac
  • Alex Smith
So--will former Georgia Bulldog QB Aaron Murray break the cycle? Only time will tell.
