BYU's 'Rise As One' Slogan Sacked After School Realizes Budweiser Uses It

When the BYU Cougars came up with 'Rise as One' they thought they had a sure-fire winner. It was short, easy to print on merchandise, and sent a good team-oriented kind of message. It was the perfect slogan for a sports team. There was just one problem.

Budweiser thought it was a great slogan too.

Somehow the marketing team at BYU failed to realize that their new slogan was the same one that the popular beer company had used during the World Cup. Anheuser-Busch of course had the phrase trademarked so the school has to pull all the merchandise, but even if they didn't you'd think BYU would pull the merchandise anyway.

We are after all talking about a school that disciplines kids for having a drink even if they are of legal drinking age. In fact if you do anything that falls under the honor code you risk being suspended:
  • Be honest
  • Live a chaste and virtuous life
  • Obey the law and all campus policies
  • Use clean language
  • Respect others
  • Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
  • Participate regularly in church services
  • Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
  • Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code
Running back Jamaal Williams is going to be suspended for the first game of the season after getting busted for a underage drinking last February. Basketball player Brandon Davies got in trouble a couple seasons ago for having consensual sex with his girlfriend.

So yeah--inadvertently promoting beer is not something that BYU wants to do.
