Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Johnny Manziel Would Have Guaranteed Our Relevance for Next 10 Years

It's the story that keeps on giving, and one that seems to keep changing as well. On draft night the world expected Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to take Johnny Manziel with the No. 16 pick in the draft should the Texas A&M quarterback fall that far. Instead the Cowboys went with what many consider one of the best first round picks Dallas has made in years--Notre Dame offensive tackle Zach Martin.

Jones knows it was a smart pick, but that doesn't change one thing. He's still mad about missing out on Johnny Football.

We've been hearing about Jerry Jones and his man-crush on Johnny Football ever since the draft ended, and we have heard a lot of crap. He wanted him; he didn't want him. He had his name on the draft card, but his son took it--but than his son didn't take it.

The story has changed so many times it's probably a matter of days before he get another variation of the tale. In a recent piece by ESPN (a very long, but good one) Jones opens up about why he wanted Manziel in spite of every one in the organization saying no--he's tired of being mediocre:
"When we were on the clock, I said, if we pick the other guy -- any other guy -- it would be a ticket to parity, more 8-8 seasons," Jones says. "The only way to break out is to gamble -- take a chance with that first pick, if you wanna dramatically improve your team. That's why I wanted Manziel, but I was the only guy who wanted him. I listened to everybody ... and I'm ... not ... happy ..."
Some would say he got lucky and point to what Manziel has done in Cleveland so far, but others would say Garrett is much better with young quarterbacks, Dallas has a much better offensive line, one of the best tight ends in the game in Jason Witten, and one of the game's top wide receivers in Dez Bryant.

A quarterback is only as good as the tools around him. Cleveland's are okay, but Dallas has better ones.

Jones knows that--which is likely why he is mad.
